Zero-carbon housing

Farasi Lane Farm has from the outset been conceived of as a mixed-use development that combines high-value urban farming with premium, low-density real estate (super low-density). We are integrating a very limited number of high-design, prefabricated sustainable houses into the farm, utilizing areas that are not appropriate for farming (usually because they are shaded by some wonderful old trees).
‘Prefab Shamba’ is centered around sustainable design and construction, revitalizing time-tested traditional wood frame construction technologies to develop houses that not only have a minimal carbon footprint (which we off-set), but actually sequester carbon within their very structures. In addition, we are piloting prefabrication techniques to learn how to build faster and more cost-effectively than we traditionally do in Kenya.
Because we are limiting the footprint given over to real estate, Prefab Shamba houses are one-bedroom units, suitable for single professionals or a couple without children. They are 130 square meters, of which 30% is verandah-based living.
Does living in a carbon-neutral house matter to you? Do you enjoy architecture and interior design? Does a morning stroll on a farm before work, maybe coffee in hand, sound pretty good? Does coming home to fresh vegetables on your doorstep – or better still, grabbing a basket and going out to pick your own – sound improbably good for Nairobi? If you answered yes to any of these questions, fill out the form below to stay updated on our fabrication schedule.

"The math is clear: It will be a disaster if we try to accommodate a rising, urbanizing 21st century population with buildings made of concrete and steel, just as it will be a disaster if we try to do it with energy generated from fossil fuels."
