About us

Farasi Lane Farm is run by a development economist who spent most of his career in a mix of management and competitiveness consulting, living and working in places as diverse as New York to Kabul.

The farm is located on land that was originally a colonial-era coffee farm but left largely unused between then and when we decided to turn it into a small-scale, commercial shamba. Because we were starting farming from scratch – having never planted so much as a carrot before! – we had an opportunity to get things right from the start: going organic from day one and not ‘spoiling the land’ with the use of heavy agricultural chemicals.

But really, the most important driver to farm organically, is that we consume our own produce. We prefer to eat and feed our daughter vegetables that are fresh, chemical free, and natural – rather than the mass-farmed, conventional alternative. Simply put, we go to market with a product that we value and eat ourselves!

Beyond us

The farm is both a lifestyle business as well as a testbed/pilot. We hope that we can develop enough experience and demonstrate sufficient success in sustainable farming to expand our footprint further, and play a small part in supporting Kenyan farmers to move away from unsustainable agricultural practices.

This will hopefully contribute towards supporting greater resilience in Kenya’s food economy as we all move into an increasingly unstable climate future.
